  19. Following up on my last question about 16650 UARTs:  Ok, so I got the
  20. null-modem cable (DB25 to DB9) to connect between a desktop and notebook
  21. (both running Windows 95 OSR2), put each in DOS mode, started MSK314 on
  22. each, and set the comm parameters so that they could talk to each other
  23. (at 115200 bps, to start).  I put both in terminal (connect) mode, just
  24. to test the connection-- characters typed on one machine should appear
  25. on the other's terminal screen, right?

  27. Wrong.  Characters typed on the desktop machine appeared on the
  28. notebook's screen, but not visa versa.  A test file transfer showed the
  29. same results: The notebook received the init packets from the desktop,
  30. but the desktop didn't receive ACKs/NAKs from the notebook.  I tried
  31. slower speeds, xon/xoff (instead of rts/cts), and half duplex.  Nothing
  32. worked.  'Show comm' always indicated that the RTS, CTS, and CD signals
  33. were on, on both machines (suggesting that the cable was connected and
  34. functioning correctly?) I checked the serial ports on each machine with
  35. Norton diagnostics (part of Norton Utilities for Win 95-- runs in DOS
  36. mode) as far as I could (I don't have loop-back plugs), and both checked
  37. out ok.
